Torn Drabble: Never Forget

Torn sat in one of the booths at the far end of the bar. People were celebrating, proud of their victory over the Metal Heads, and more importantly, the Baron. They weren’t thinking of tomorrow. They were only thinking of right now and how they had somehow, against impossible odds, accomplished their goal.

They weren’t thinking about all the casualties. All the men that had sacrificed themselves so the city could live free from a tyrant and a pressing enemy species.

Torn knew every one of their faces, every one of their names. And he would never forget them. People who had given everything they had to a dream. This movement would be nowhere without them and he was determined to never let people forget it.

Torn Drabble: Time For Regrets

There was a kid who joined up, back in the beginning of Torn’s days in the Underground. He had big green eyes and a crooked smile. Always ready to help. He didn’t demand the most dangerous missions, knowing very well he wouldn’t be able to handle them. He listened, never argued. He couldn’t have been older than 15, and even that was pushing it.

“When this is all over, Shepard…” Kaidan felt the tears welling up in his throat as he stroked her battered hand. “When you wake up, I’m taking you to the beach. Everyone has to go at least once.”

She said she’d never been. He would have to change that.

“I saw it… It was beautiful.”

Her voice was so weak that he wasn’t sure he’d heard anything at all. A trick of the wind maybe. But when she spoke again he knew he hadn’t imagined it.

“Mordin said…he loves it. And Mordin is never wrong.”

Her eyes were open, barely. But those eyes were on him. They watched as the tears welled up in his own eyes and streamed down his face. They watched as he nearly broke down, relief washing over him like the waves on the beach.

“I’m glad you didn’t stay without me, Shepard.”

“I couldn’t pass up the chance to see you in a bathing suit, now could I?”

His lips quivered as his face broke into a full smile. “And thank God for that.” He kissed her hand. “After saving the universe from the Reapers, I’d say you deserve a nice vacation.”

Love Is Just Another Mission part 4

Part 4

The same dream.

No.

Nightmare.

The shadows. The voices. All of the people she’d failed along the way. And the child… Always so close…but never close enough.

And upon watching him burn up, she jolted awake with a gasp. It was like coming up for air after being under the water for too long.

She looked around, in search of something familiar. For a moment she was confused, seeing someone next to her. Her mind was fuzzy and her stomach felt off. That’s when she remembered the drinking. Shit. A lot of drinking. And James.

As much as she knew it was wrong, she couldn’t deny that she needed it.

But the heavy mist from her nightmare still hung in her head. She needed to wake up. When she stood, her stomach shifted and she groaned a little.

While she appeared invincible, the one think she couldn’t handle was her liquor.

If Kaidan had been there…he would have taken the drink from her hand and smiled. ‘I think you’ve had enough, Commander,’ he’d say. And she’d protest, but in the end he would win. He always won when it came to that.

The name ‘Shepard’

“Shepard.” Kaidan spoke, somewhat forcefully, voice gruff.

And there was so much packed into that one word. That name had always carried a lot. It meant something to everyone, whether it be good or bad. Everyone knew the name ‘Shepard’. Whether it gave you hope or brought about disdain, everyone knew it. But it carried something different when Kaidan spoke it. When that name left his lips, it carried with it all the love, hurt and confusion he’d felt for over two years. But also strapped to its back, was a meaning no one else but Shepard herself could comprehend.

It gave her moment to pause; gave her a reason to look up into those brown eyes and see everything he was trying to tell her.

It gave her hope.

Everything was hazy, as if I were seeing through someone else’s eyes but my own. I could feel that I was in a body but…something was wrong. I couldn’t figure out what…I tried searching for some semblance of…anything.

I felt as if I had been here before.

Name.

What is my name?

“Anders.” A voice boomed. I could hear it out loud and in my head. But I wasn’t speaking. I could feel my mouth moving but…why was I not in control? It felt as if someone had implanted me into someone else’s body. I wanted out.

“It’s different not being the one who maintains control isn’t it? I’m not surprised you don’t like it. I can’t imagine anyone would.”

It was my voice. My voice speaking but…I wasn’t choosing the words. I tried to speak, but it came out as an echo inside an empty, dark abyss.

I should be dead…

See reason, Brother. I don’t want to fight you.”

The look in Carver’s eyes had convinced me. I turned my back on everything Anders stood for. I couldn’t lose the only family I had left.

Knight Commander Meredith’s voice brought me back to the present.

“I’ll leave you to deal with him. He’s your companion. Do as you see fit.” She glared at Anders’ back before moving on.

I moved to stand by him. His back was hunched, elbows resting on his knees.

“There’s nothing you can say that I haven’t already said to myself. I took a spirit into my soul and changed myself forever to achieve this. This is the justice all mages have awaited.”

“Did that spirit tell you to do this?” I almost spat.

“No… When we merged he ceased to be. We are one now. I can no more ignore the injustice of the Circle than he could.”

“I might’ve understood if you’d only told me!”

“I wanted to tell you! But what if you stopped me? Or worse! What if you wanted to help? I couldn’t let you do that…”

I looked around at all the bleeding bodies of mages…innocent mages.

There were many nights where Garrett would waken in the middle of the night to find me hunched over the desk, scribbling away at the only thing that seemed to matter anymore.

Tonight appeared to be no different.

I heard him shifting and grunting a little as he stretched his arm out to search for me on the empty side of the bed.

“Anders…”

I was about to answer but stopped when I heard him speak again.

“I don’t want to lose you to a cause…When there’s a mage in need right here…”

That struck me like a blade through the heart and I dropped my quill. My brow creased as I listened to his slow breathing.

He must have still been asleep. Or half asleep anyhow. He wouldn’t have said such a thing out loud otherwise. Hawke was always supporting the cause, always supporting me. He never questioned my reasons or means. I had never even considered…his side.

There was something about this entire situation that was setting me on edge. I could see Anders’ worried glances directed at me every so often and the looks him and Varric would exchange on my behalf. If I wasn’t so focused on finding Mother it would have bothered me. I didn’t need anyone to worry about me. I was very capable of taking care of myself.

But when I saw her…pieced together like some sort of rag doll…I wanted to retch and scream and cry all at the same time.

‘My little boy has become so strong…’

But I haven’t. If I was strong I would have been able to save her. I failed her. Just like I failed Bethany and Carver… This family fell apart and I did nothing to stop it.

“I should have tried harder!” I picked up the chair I had been sitting in and hurled it across the room, hearing it splinter against the wall opposite me.

“Garrett…” Anders’ voice came from the doorway. “There was nothing you could have done…”
